Minutes of Meeting

Posting on behalf of the "IT handicapped" Panny.
Minutes of the meeting XP- team 21-10-09.
Guys; Thanks to those who attended the meeting.
In short a overview about the most important points discussed and decided on.
  • In the next weeks we will assign people to the official titles necessary for the C.F.A. and for XP in order to bring more structure in the club.( Panny will trace the official titles and names submitted to the C.F.A ).
  • Decision makers( ( board of Xp Team ) will be Rodolphe ,Otto ,Panny, and in a separated meeting they will agree among each other how they divide responsibility's. Once clear they will inform all XP members about this.On every meeting they will evaluate and collect all individual opinions/suggestions/ideas.
  • Tony assigned as our head coach and full responsible for matters on the field, tournaments, practice and all related matters that involves the games.Same time he has committed to be close and personally involved in the club and the players in order to do this Job like no one else could do ! Thanks Tony ,you are the best coach we could imagine !
  • Panny will come up with a program for 2010 with all tournaments ,games ,competitions organised thrum C.F.A registered teams ,members, and inform XP-team on time.
  • New Guest player policy ; We have agreed that guest players are allowed to join XP team for 3 games for free and after they will be given the option to become XP -member.Any player who has used his 3 free games and will not become a XP- member can not join /enter the fields anymore.Every guest player has to be informed that there is no guarantee that they will play because there is a priority given to XP-members to secure that they play. This decision will be taken by the head coach on the spot.We have agreed to have a flexible and friendly approach towards this policy in order to welcome new players and make them feel comfortable.
  • For 2010 season( we try faster ) we will ask from all individual members if there is a need / will, to follow practice courses before the game or even on a different day/time.Xavier has announced to be willing to take the lead for this.I suggest if there is enough interest he will discuss with Tony how to proceed on this. Thanks Xavier !
  • Board will report to the C.F.A all joint tournaments by XP team so it could be reported in the yearly reports of C.F.A and this will help the ranking of the Cebu Football association on the FIFA listing.
Small matters
  • C.I.S. payments will be given to Xavier who has a easy access to the school since his factory is located next to the school. After payment he will forward receipts to Otto.
  • This Saturday 24 Oct no soccer at CIS. Plan b will follow thrum text message.
  • Rodolphe will start in the next weeks to announce the new policy's to Guest players so in a few weeks time we can slowly make the change.
  • Forgotten to discuss but still important !! Christmas party / get together will be organised by the board. Please forward any nice idea or suggestion ! Otto asked attention for a charity project of one of our most honorable members Flemming who is doing this together with his wife Elisabeth. We are thinking of coming up with a raffle during Christmas to collect money and donate ! Please give us more ideas how we could possibly raise money for this Beautiful project. For those who don't know the projects Flemming is doing we will ask a brochure of his charity organisation. Flemming; any change you can bring some brochures on the next Saturday ?
See you guys soon.
Panny.

Champions League

Not sure anyone's interested but since Jordi is no longer here with the Playstation I've decided to setup a fantasy team this year. Anyone dare challenge me to a friendly club wager for who scores the most points by the end of Group Stage? Few hours left to register and pick a team.

Guestplayer

hi guys
in responce to the comment of my dear friend Tony about the guestplayer at CIS.
a guest is first of all somebody who is invitet.. and he should be invitet from a regular member of our club. what we see lately is an uncontrolled flood of koreans. before there was 5 or 6 of them. we could handle that without mayor problems. lately we have up to 15 faces on the pitch and nobody know them. even guestplayer invite and bring along other guys. I think this goes in a wrong way. already last saturday we had a short talking that it cant go like that. Tony you was not around, the game was horrible, everybody confirmed that. There was korean kids they could not stop or controll any ball.
i believe we should select a little who play with us.. remember the 3 russians who joined us one time at timex..we sent them home for luck of skills and it was a good decision.
we are not exclusive but i think a football club is also something social to us and i think that we all more or less also good friends outside the pitch. Any new player should also fit in the social structure of our club. the guys who join lately just show up, dont talk to anybody and disappear after the game. i was asking before some of the koreans if they want to become member.. they dont like.
i dont see any problem if you invite a guest and can not come with him..just meet at the gate and go in together.
Since there are not every week new members, the list dont have to be updated every week.
we had a small meeting last monday at taproom,-Rodolphe joined via text messages- and agreed to limit the guestplayer. i think its better for the game. we have 27 member and every saturday we are enough to have a nice game. with additional 10 to 15 uninvitet guys we are simple to many and the fun of the game is realy strained.

Personal comment

Morning guys,

I am using the blog rather than text as the following is pretty lengthy and should be of interest to all members.

Brief –
I had a message on Monday afternoon inviting to me to a meeting that evening to talk through a concern the club had about the numbers of guest players that were turning up on a Saturday afternoon unnanounced and whose quality, in terms of footballing skills, might not be great. Unfortunately I was unable to attend the meeting but commented that I would support the majority decision. I will still support that decision but feel very nervous about the direction the club is now going.

Decision –
A guest player can only join if invited by a member and has to come with that member being introduced to the team; there first game is free. A members list will be placed at the guardhouse with only those players names appearing able to play; any guest will have to enter with a member.

Personal Comment –
The above decision does not tackle the question on lack of footballing skills; a member can still invite a player that might not have the ability that some of our members are looking for; what are we going to do in this case? Is the member going to be accountable and responsible for introducing only players with acceptable skills? How will that decision be reached? Who is going to marshal this?
Personally I think we are getting in to ‘murky waters’; since when have we become an elitist group of players? I still believe and will always believe we can have a club that caters for both talented and less talented players. If we are getting the better players disgruntled because of the quality of the game let’s look at running with 2 small pitches across field let’s not look at ways to discourage players joining. By the way; who will choose who those better players are? Many times I have been frustrated by my own play and know I don’t have the same skills as some others…. but am I included because of my service (in years) to the club?

Having a list on the gate will come with its own problems, just as it did at the Timex field. You need somebody who will regularly update the list and ensure the guards are working with the latest updates. Having guests only turning up with members will mean some advance planning. I recently introduced Mark to the club but knew it was not practical to meet him in advance of the game; we thus met at the field. Now I could have got someone else to meet up with him before the game but honestly didn’t want to piss about with that process. By the way; how are we going to treat the Koreans that are not members? Are they included/excluded from the list? Some of these players have questionable skills.
We actively promote our team on the web, we take opportunities to promote the club in the paper and talk to people we meet in the everyday life plus whatever other opportunities arise so we are always going to have the potential for people turning-up unannounced or with dubious skills. Do we really want to discourage those people? What happens if one of those people happens to be pretty decent? Is it not easier for the members within XP Cebu to take the initiative and start up a conversation with those new uninvited guest players and start asking questions? What’s happened with the power of verbal communication?

OK, now the problem with everything is that it needs people to get involved; it needs people to stop putting their own personal frustrations first and think about where the club is going. If we want an elitist group of players that have great footballing skills then fine; has that decision been taken already because I am not sure it has; or are we a club open to all that will look at ways of keeping everybody involved and not introduce hurdles to climb?

Now I think we could do a few things. Xavier and the training pre-game at 4.00pm is actually a really good idea even though I know many of the members don’t feel the necessity to join. We could use this as a tool for developing those guest players whose skills are not so well rounded and a way of identifying stronger players. We could move away from the full size pitch (which I personally enjoy) and go to 2 x smaller pitches; here you could mix the stronger players with a minority of weaker players whose games need developing.

Of course all this is dependent on people willing to take the mantle and organize which is something that has always been a problem with far too many ‘vocal’ rather than ‘active’ (inflammatory I know).

Maybe the first question we need to ask ourselves is ‘What type of club do we want to be? Do we want to be inclusive or exclusive?’. The question of local players has already been asked with some sought of muddled decision reached. After we have the answer to that question maybe then the decision on players becomes easier.

All the above is my own personal thoughts; a decision has already been reached but my concern to the welfare of the club led me to capturing the above concerns. If we are all happy with the decision then no further action required.

1st USP Football Festival

So Sunday June 21st witnessed the Cebu XP Football Club +36 age group taking the 1st USP Football Festival tournament title.

On a very difficult pitch that was uneven, bolder ridden and on the small side the team did particularly well in trying to get some passing movement and organization. Thanks to Otto for agreeing to go between the sticks; although not a natural keeper he made a couple of fine stops with his feet (you wouldn’t want to dive) at crucial times. He was well protected by the outstanding display of Chris and Conor whilst Horst put in some cameo performances that witnessed a great scissor kick. Edwin and Panny switched between midfield and forward; Eric and myself took up midfield duties whilst Lars and Franz took a half each upfront.
For me both defenders and Lars (3 goals) put in tremendous displays but in truth this was again an all-round great TEAM performance that was again a display of the unity and fun we are having at the moment.
Our final came against a team that we had beat 2 – 0 in an earlier game Samareno. There style of play in the final was more aggressive than previous game and some heavy challenges were given out that did not receive the punishment they deserved. Franz seemed to have scored a legal goal but the referee decided otherwise and the game ended in a 0 – 0 draw and thus to penalties.
Now we all know the history of the team on penalties which made it nice to see 3 volunteers Edwin, Eric and Lars all eager to take responsibility. The rest is history, 3 penalties and 3 goals with Samareno missing there 2nd goal and giving us the trophy. Back to the Tap Room for ‘beers on the house’ and everybody was happy.

Club Meeting - 11th June

Here are the minutes from the last meeting. It was great to see such a strong turn-out; I must say I think we are beggining to generate the same enthusiasm that the club had numerous years ago under our esteemed friend Horst. Lets not take the foot off the pedal now and make sure we continue to grow and more importantly have fun.

1. Damien from the Gustavian was thanked for their recent sponsorship of the XP Cebu football kit and updated with the clubs recent success stories. Damien was given the opportunity to explain about the ‘Lifestyles’ membership after which several of the team signed-up.
2. We spoke about the 1st USP Football Festival which is being held in Lahug on the 21st June and captured potential interest from players. Since the meeting we have agreed on a men’s 36+ team and no men’s open team.
3. For future tournaments Franz has agreed to organize the clubs application
4. As last year the Singapore football team will be returning to Cebu for a 11 – a – side match. Dates have yet to be confirmed so wait for further information.
5. Otto gave his finance report stating that we have P33,000 in the bank with only a P3,000 expense outstanding for the use of CIS
· It was agreed to buy 15 black socks, some more balls and cones. In addition Lars will look to his friend in Norway to bring some items for the 1st Aid Box.
6. We had an open discussion on the direction the club should go in relation to ‘local’ membership. It was agreed that we would leave the door open to local footballers but at the same time ensure that any person joining us expat or local was a ‘good fit’ for the team as a whole. In reality this is something that we already practice.
7. Xavier has agreed to take a ‘skills’ training session on a Saturday from 3.30pm until 4.00pm as a way to improve on our chances in any upcoming tournament. This is an optional choice for any players but as always your support appreciated.
8. It has been agreed to hold monthly meetings. The next meeting will be announced nearer the time.
9. Edwin/Jeremy have been tasked with organizing an ‘away’ trip to a football tournament; Pantaya was sounding fun. This will not be until 2010.
10. We spoke about potential sponsorships which has developed since the meeting. I will update as appropriate
11. There are only a few people missing from the Blog; Jeremy has been tasked on spoon feeding them on joining
12. Indoor football has been losing players recently and has begun to be a challenge texting people for commitment to play; we have now reduced the night down to 1 with Otto and Rodolphe managing players.

The 3rd ECCP Soccer Cup

The 3rd ECCP Soccer Cup was held yesterday June 7th, 2009 at the Cebu International School in Pitos, Cebu City.

What a great tournament we had and an amazing send off for our very good friend Shawn. Representing ‘The Gustavian,’ our current team sponsors, it was a pleasure to see us scoring 20 goals over 7 matches and only conceding 1. With such a record it was obvious that we were going to walk away with the trophy.

OK, as coach I should have kept better records but after consultation this is how we believe the goals were spread:
Edwin x 6
Seb x 5
Panny x 4
Rodolphe x 3
Xavier x 2

There were many fine performances, indeed as a team the passing, support, enthusiasm and shooting was a joy to watch; from Warren in goal through the defense, midfield and forwards everybody contributed in the success of the team.

Panny, Edwin, Rodolphe and Xavier all made the tournaments ‘Dream 7’ but in reality we could have been nominated in every spot; the team was that good! For the records the team was:

Keeper – Warren
Defense – Jeremy, Shawn, Chris
Midfield – Rodolphe, Xavier, Eric, Mike, Panny
Strikers – Seb, Edwin
Coach – Tony

It was good to see the support for the team from other XP players and great to see the unity and fun running throughout everyone; back at the Tap Room for drinks it was evident we knew how to have a good time. Thanks for playing guys; it’s a pleasure being a part of the team and I know we can secure more trophies in the future.

World Cup 2009 - Manila

The 20th Manila Soccer World Cup tournament at the Nomads Sports Club had the XP Cebu football team play in Group B under the banner heading team of Europe. The group consisted of Spain, England, Holland and Europe. Top 2 teams would qualify for the ‘Cup’ knockout tournament whilst the following 2 teams would qualify for the ‘Plate’ tournament both of which were to be held on the Sunday with a straight knockout format.

The Saturday was to prove a frustrating day as the team struggled to find ‘true form’ with some misdirected passing and a high tempo game that just didn’t suit our style. This was clearly demonstrated by the 3rd game on the first day when at last the team settled, picked out some nice passes and slowed down the game to allow greater control. Indeed if it was not for Edwin being badly let down by the referee which saw him pick-up a red card instead of the opposing player picking up a yellow card then in all probability a draw or win could have been had against the England team. As it was we lost all three games which gave us entry in to the plate competition.

Day 2 was to see the true colors of the XP Cebu, Europe team as they began their first game against the Celtic Tigers a team made-up of Irish and Scottish players. Edwin, with 1 red card, was unable to play in this game and was thus asked to coach the team allowing myself the opportunity of getting a run-out on the pitch. Edwin’s first managerial decision with his starting team selection proved very successful as passing was to feet, the tempo controlled and the determination high. All players wanted to win this game badly, which was clear for everyone to see, and it was no surprise to see the team walk off the pitch as the final whistle blew with a 2 – 0 win with goals from Jordi and Jeremy.

Next up was France in the semi final and with Edwin restored to the game the coaching role was again restored to myself. A very strange game with so many opportunities opening-up for the Europe team with post, bar and French defenders all denying the opening goal. Again determination was clearly visible but it was controlled with passing so much better than what had been experienced on day one. At last the goal came through Edwin who took his shot wonderfully powering the ball in to the back of the net. But the drama of this game had not yet finished when the French took advantage of some indecision in the European defense and managed to score a very lucky equalizer. So it was that at the final whistle the dreaded penalty shoot-out was to decide the future of the two teams; do not forget that the XP Cebu team has a dreadful history of winning a penalty shoot-out so it was with nervousness that we went in to this scenario. First was Sebastian and a very cool opening goal, Edwin – goal, Vincent (our magnificent keeper) – goal, Jordi (that was scary) – goal and Xavier – goal and with Vincent making the all important save we were through to the final.

Final; Europe v Latin America

Magnificent; we had come from a beating on the first day and managed to work our way through to the final of the ‘Plate’ competition. This is where we truly belonged this is where the team became strong, where players supported each other, came with their ace game and demonstrated just how important and rich the team spirit had been over the 2 days.

The how is not important on the final game; just know that Sebastian x 3 goals, Xavier x 1 goal, took the XP Cebu, European team to a stunning and well deserved 4 – 0 win!

There are a lot of things I have missed from this report. For example Mike playing for the team on the Saturday and having to go home on the same evening. The great attitude of players asked to play in positions that would not be their own personal first choice Xavier in particular but Jordi in addition on the second day. The attitude of the team that played with spirit, that enjoyed the games, that did not moan at each other, did not walk off the pitch in disgust, the brilliance of Vince in goal and at last our ability to score goals. It was truly a pleasure being a part of this team, we had lots of fun, lots of pain, lots of stories and have walked away with a trophy. Well done to all you are a credit to the XP Cebu football team.

Finally. Thank you to our new sponsors the ‘Gustavian’, tonight from 8pm we will be at the Tap Room celebrating the clubs success. Thank you to Rodolphe for organizing the new team shirts and helping with the European entry and thank you to Jordi who will be returning to Spain on Tuesday but has bought that much needed ‘Catalan’ spirit to brighten-up our touring lives. Finally, thanks to all the players, I was proud to be your coach.
